A large number of stroke patients, who would not have had any treatment options, even one year ago, are now potentially eligible for new treatments. This activity is designed to improve recognition of expanded treatment eligibility and highlights the differences between current stroke treatment practices, cutting-edge imaging-based treatment, and the future of stroke care. McCague, DO, Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon, Natividad Medical Center SimLab Case: A 44 year-old male arrives by EMS to a tertiary care ED where the trauma team has been activated. He was the driver in a single-vehicle MVC. He presents screaming and moaning with a GCS of 13. He has an obvious open fracture of his right forearm. He also has decreased air entry to the right side of his chest. The team will need to recognize the tension pneumothorax as part of their primary survey. They will then need to irrigate and splint the right arm after they have completed their secondary survey. As the secondary survey is being completed, the patient will become hypotensive again. This time, the team will find free fluid in the RUQ. Desired Outcomes:

Jay Westbrook, M.S., R.N., CHPN, Visiting Faculty Scholar, Harvard Medical School, Clinical Director, Compassionate Journey Compassion Fatigue results in mistake-making, withdrawal, apathy, and exhaustion. It is created by prolonged & ongoing exposure to suffering & trauma, at work. It is sometimes referred to as secondary or vicarious PTSD. This session will distinguish Compassion Fatigue from Burnout, identify its causes and consequences, and provide tools to empower clinicians to reduce the occurrence and the intensity of Compassion Fatigue. Cesario, MD, Emeritus Dean and Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease, UCI School of Medicine
Each day, one out of 25 patients in the US contracts a hospital-acquired infection (HAI), resulting in billions of wasted dollars and an eye-popping 90,000 deaths annually. A new report published by The Leapfrog Group shows that the percentage of hospitals achieving zero infections has declined dramatically since 2015, indicating many patients are still at risk. Delivering quality care has become even more essential for hospitals and health systems since Medicare started issuing penalties for high rates of hospital-acquired conditions—things like falls, ulcers, and infections that could well have been avoided. Statistics from last year underscore this importance: In 2017, Medicare penalized 751 hospitals and health systems for that very reason with a 1% reduction in reimbursement rates for 2018. HAIs are rising across all five examined in the survey, including central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated UTIs, surgical site infection after colon surgery, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Clostridium difficile. Hospital-Acquired Infections7:00 am: CME: BREAKFAST Journal Club: This Month's Topic... Hospital-Acquired InfectionsAugust 29, 2018 – CME: BREAKFAST Journal Club: This Month\'s Topic... Hospital-Acquired Infections Moderated by Andrew S. McCague, DO, Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon, Natividad Medical Center Natividad has recently set a quality initiative to reduce hospital acquired infections. Evidence demonstrates that physicians are more likely to make permanent behavior changes when educational interventions are ongoing rather than simply one and done. This activity is a follow up to the live activity provided earlier in the month. Physicians may not know the relevant medical literature related to HAI. Physicians need to review this literature and discuss how it applies to Natividad. Physicians also need an opportunity to increase their awareness of the problem and identify ways in which they can contribute to improvements. Desired Outcomes:
